2019 Prize Winner: Josephine Halvorson

重庆欢乐生肖官方网址Josephine Halvorson studied in New York City at The Cooper Union (BFA, 2003) and Columbia University (MFA, 2007). She is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Austria (2003-4), a Harriet Hale Woolley Fellowship at the Fondation des états-Unis in Paris (2007-8), a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant (2009), a residency at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation (2016), and was the first American fellow at the French Academy in Rome (2014-15). Her work has been exhibited internationally and is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York, and Peter Freeman, Inc., Paris. Solo exhibitions include the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC (2015) and Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY (2016). She will present solo exhibitions of her work at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston as part of the Foster Prize (2019), and at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico (2020). Writing about and by Halvorson has appeared in academic journals, catalogs, and publications. Josephine Halvorson is Professor of Art and Chair of Graduate Studies in Painting at Boston University.

About the Prize:

The Blackwell Prize in Painting recognizes an artist of high achievement in plein air/observational painting, drawing, or a related two-dimensional medium.

Funding

Named in honor of Newnan-based educators (and UWG alumni) Fred R. and Nell W. Blackwell, the Blackwell Prize in Painting is administered by the School of the Arts (SOTA) at the University of West Georgia and is funded by The Blackwell Charitable Trust of Newnan. Additional resources and funding come from the School of the Arts, University of West Georgia, and the Newnan Artist-in-Residence Program (Newnan ArtRez).

Honorarium

The prize comes with a $10,000 honorarium and a residency of up to one month at Gray Cottage in Newnan, Georgia (part of the Newnan Artist-in-Residence Program).
