The Counseling Center provides confidential counseling for issues that affect Advanced Academy, Move On When Ready (MOWR) and Honors College students academically, socially, or emotionally.

We also provide crisis counseling, group counseling, and outside referrals to students who may be experiencing psychological, social or behavioral difficulties. The Counseling Center’s approach incorporates a developmental perspective with a Humanistic orientation, and supports the cognitive, psychosocial, and emotional needs of all of our students.

Common reasons gifted students seek counseling include, but are not limited to:

The Advanced Academy, MOWR Program, and Honors College have a dedicated counselor to meet the emotional and developmental needs of the students. Jeff Davis is a Licensed Professional Counselor who graduated with his MA in Psychology from UWG in 2008. He has been working as a professional counselor in the state of Georgia since that time, gaining experience working with teenagers and adults using a variety of therapeutic modalities.

The Counseling Center also houses 12 other counselors to provide high-quality services to the students of the Advanced Academy, MOWR Program, and Honors College.

Commonly Asked Questions

  • Do counselors report rule infractions to University officials?

    We do not report Advanced Academy disciplinary issues to any University Staff, including the Police. Our role is to be supportive and facilitate growth, not get students in trouble. Counselors do not communicate to the Advanced Academy staff about any clinically-related issues or disclosures from students.

  • What about confidentiality?
    Exceptions do exist

    Sessions are confidential, but all counselors are mandated reporters. Exceptions include imminent danger to self or others as well as reports of child/elderly abuse.

    All counseling is free of charge, and students can be seen as often as necessary, as long as they are enrolled.
